Volunteer Houston

In 1974, a group of Houstonians who were very involved in the philanthropic community realized that the growing number of nonprofit organizations needed a better way to engage citizens as volunteers in providing service to the community. After a national search for a solution, they organized a local Volunteer Center to serve as a clearinghouse for volunteers. Houston’s Volunteer Center became a part of a large national network of organizations with the same mission. We are classified as a 501 (c) 3 organization by the IRS and incorporated to operate in the State of Texas.

Throughout the years, additional programs and initiatives have been added to support specific volunteering populations and to promote volunteerism. We pride ourselves with being on the cutting edge of community needs and supporting the trends of the volunteering public.

Nationally, we are affiliated with the Points of Light Institute and the Hands On Network. There are nearly 400 Volunteer Centers in the United States, Canada, and other countries.

The vision of Volunteer Houston is that all people make volunteering central in their lives and work. Our mission is to engage more people and resources more effectively in volunteer service.
